Some notes on the Stifo@Sandberg conference:

In his keynote Bruce Sterling, science fiction writer, sketched out four very different futures for digital technology: on one side the Bollywood (low tech/low social action) scenario and on the other side the YouTube 3.0 (high tech, high social reaction)  He could not predict which one will become dominant. He was not into films at all but: `I would be thrilled if one of my books would be made into a Bollywood movie.’

Something totally different was the talk of Jan-Bart van Beek, from Guerrilla Games. He gave an short overview of the history of gaming and the game industry and elaborated on the ingredients of a good quality game: a clair goal, rules, challenge, competitors, interaction and reward. Van Beek regards himself not as a storyteller. ‘I am more a designer, we facilitate a framework, create an environment. The player makes the story.’ He showed some examples of video clips, commercials and movies with elements of game world.  Fascinating. Have a look at the trailer of their newest edition of the science fiction adventure for Playstation 2: KillZone. This might inspire you, as it did the Stimuleringsfonds. It announced a new fund especially for games: gamefonds.nl.

I also appreciated the Blender Institute, represented by Ton Roosendaal. The Blender Institute coordinates and facilitates Open Projects related to 3D movies, games or visual effects. He showed us some possibilities, beautiful made film scenes from ‘Elephants Dream’ and ‘Big buck bunny’; animation movies made with Blender software (open source).  The Blender Institute is a business – their main income is from dvd’s of the projects, books and T-shirts – but a sympathetic one.

We had a short look in the kitchen of Floris Kaayk, the maker of The order Electrus, an animation film about insects in a technology world, and Metalosis Maligna.  Choosing animation as his field of expertise, Kaayk specialised in blending computer generated images with live-action video to present his ideas. His first two films are combined with the informative character of a documentary. ‘My main goal is to tell a story, not the use the newest techniques.’

Technology knows no borders. Effects are not only more popular in the movie, but also our environment is a platform for effects. Soon we shall see the chair where we can sit at home moving together with the image.
A lot will change in the film industry.  The conference of the Stifo@Sandberg on Friday 31 October, shall give an overview of developments, new trends and ideas and will start a debate with speakers and the audience on these.
